After graduating college I felt that I had not taken the effort to understand what was the biggest question I had as a prospective artist, which was, “What is the current discourse in painting? How is art moving forward in exploring the possibilities we have at our current disposal in terms of materials, in terms of process, and how to create art that is relevant in regards to ongoing social, environment and cultural disparities”?

The compositions themselves are constant exercises, invented and drawn from nature, from landscapes, horizons, and also from the material itself, it’s physicality. The fact that I pour, carve, sand, or use a concrete mixer in the process is the result of constant experimentation stemming from a desire to push the boundaries of what a drawing or a painting can be.

Indeed to me these are drawings and paintings, their physicality is on purpose to invite the viewer to closely visit and inspect the work, to want to touch it, go through it, almost to breathe it. The materials themselves are chosen because of their uses. Concrete, sand, tar, asphalt, sandpaper, and through my focus they become elevated beyond their intended use into art.

The materials used in my work also draw from my background, from the viewpoint of the son of a construction worker and a house keeper, and as one who crossed the border at the age of eight and spent ten years living as an undocumented immigrant

As my work has progressed the direction it has taken has been more of a nuanced visual translation of the industries we ignore and the people we ignore using the materials we don't think about to comment on the invisible infrastructure of brown-ness in a society that swears it doesn't see color in polite company.
